The University of London External Programme Laws (LL.B.)

DEGREES AND DIPLOMAS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LONDON AWARDED TO EXTERNAL STUDENTS

Senate House, University of London

Statement by John McConnell, Director, External & Internal Student Administration, University of London, January 2002

DEGREES AND DIPLOMAS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LONDON AWARDED TO EXTERNAL STUDENTS

1. Degrees and diplomas of the University of London are recognised throughout the world. Under its Royal Charter of 1836 the University has full degree awarding powers at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. For over 140 years it has made its degrees and diplomas available world-wide through the External System.

2. The University awards a single degree or diploma to students who study full-time in London and to External students. The examination performance of all students is judged on exactly the same basis and the University does not distinguish between the awards made to them. Statute 66(2) of the University states: "Candidates granted degrees and other awards shall have attained the same academic standard irrespective of mode or place of study or examination."

  1. The University maintains common standards for its students in the following ways:

a) All degrees open to students studying full-time in London and to External students have the same minimum entrance requirements.

b) Academic quality is provided by Colleges of the University which produce course regulations and syllabuses and nominate Boards of Examiners.

c) All examination papers for External students are set and marked by academic staff appointed by the University of London. The statutes of the University require the examination scripts of External candidates to be marked using the same principles for assessment as are used to assess candidates studying full-time at a College of the University. The same principles for degree classification are used for both kinds of student.

d) The degree or diploma certificate awarded to graduates states either the name of the College of the University the student attended, or that he or she studied as an External student.

The University of London is fully committed to the maintenance and development of the External System, and to the enhancement of educational opportunity world-wide. For over a century it has been a principle of the University's External activities that there should be no dilution or compromising of standards, lest the integrity of the University of London degree be in any way impugned.

ICLS 2008 LL.B. Revision Weekend

I recently attended ICLS's review weekend with respect to my first year examinations for the University of London's LL.B. External Programme.

I feel that the review sessions provided me with an overall sense of much needed focus as I move into the final phase of my revision prior to the upcoming examinations.

Thank you ICLS for putting together such an invaluable review weekend."

ICLS 2007 LL.B. Revision Weekend

"I just wanted to take a moment to thank you very much for your wonderful lectures in Toronto this weekend.  You have made it much easier for me to begin revising for my examinations in June.  I know that it must have been an exhausting weekend, and appreciate your efforts all the more!  Your written material is excellent, and will assist me in organizing my studies.  I hope to have the pleasure of participating in a weekend next year..."

ICLS Writing Workshop Equips Students

"I just wanted to say Thank You to you and your team for executing such a productive weekend...  Saturday was very intensive and by the end of the writing session I felt confident in myself, as I learned the techniques only ICLS could have taught. I now know what the examiners are looking for and most of all I understand how to organize the vast information I have per subject. You were organized, enthusiastic and addressed relevant issues. I am looking forward to the March Seminar. Thank you once again."

ICLS INTEGRATES LIVE CLASSES

June 2006: ICLS provides live face to face legal writing workshops and selected LL.B. revision courses in addition to it's online legal programme starting in the Toronto area this fall.

According to George Pappas, ICLS Executive Director, "ICLS will provide expanded teaching without any additional cost to ICLS students.  ICLS is going to do whatever it takes to increase the value of it's legal program.  We're excited about supporting our online programme with brick and mortar learning.  What's great about this development is that all ICLS students world wide will benefit since similarly registered ICLS students will receive the same review materials from the Toronto or New York City (or other location) seminars at no additional cost.  We're also looking at other locations and hope to announce further face to face teaching for the University of London LL.B. degree course."
